Plastic Bag and Synthesis

1- It end with the line “I wish you had made me so that I could die” because a plastic bag will never decompose, it just break apart in peaces. the is line is important because it is telling us human not to produce  something that we canot decompose or eliminate.

2- The plastic bag keep saying he is “useless” to animal because animal can’t get nothing of the plastic bag. if animal eat the plastic bag it would be a damage to them.

3-This movie reflect the idea of absurdism because the plastic bag was looking for it purpose in life but was not able to find it and ended up in a situation where the bag wished that he could die. In addition, the film is raleted to the book “waiting for Godot” because the plastic bag was waiting for his creature but he never came. In the play waiting for godot , vladmire and his friend were waiting for a guy named godot but he never showed up.

4-this film is connected to chemistry class in a way that we learned that plastic bags can stay in the water million years without decomposing. Plastic is made out of chemical elements that are hard to destroy and almost impossible the decompose by it self in nature.

5- This class and chemistry are related because they both teach us how we as human are destroying our own environment by creating things such as plastic bag that can never be totally destroyed or decomposed. Soon we are going to run out of space for all those plastic that we are making because it will ocuppy most of the land and water which will maybe poison the water and make it unusable by human.

Sociological Imagination is when you connect public issues to your personal problems.

One activity we did in class that related to sociological immagination is when we were looking at event and issues that happened the year we were born  and tell how those events or issues have an impact on our life

Photograph

1.      In the photograph I see a sad women with holding a baby and two other children hiding behind her

2.      when i see this picture i think about: homeless, immigrants, veterants.

3.      These people are homeless, they are Hungry and they have nowhere to go. My clues are the fact that the woman look miserable and the kids look very sleepy and hungry but they have nowhere to go.

4.      If I was the person in this photograph I will feel awful because the appearance of the photograph is nothing like where a person should live. probably i would do the same thing they are doing, seat and wait for something that you don’t whn it is coming or even if it will come.

5.      When I look at this photograph It reminds me of the time of the great depression, when people were in poverty. It may also be About Immigrant worker who have no right at all.

6.     This seems to take place in a very dirty place where only homeless are.

7.      The woman and her kids in the photopgraph might be Immigrants who scape poverty in their native country and come to another land to find the worst.

8.      I think this picture is telling the story  of how Immigrant are treated and what are their living condition.

As an immigrant I feel very sad for this people in the photograph because they don’t deserve to be treated that way. each person  should have the right to healthcare, food and shelter.

A story for this picture could be an immigrant woman who migrate to another country to work and provide for her family. In the country she migrate to happen to have a civil war like the condition in lybia right now where immigrant form different part of the world are waiting at the Tunisian Border for help. This Women is sitting at the Border with her family waiting for their useless government to come and get her back to her native land.

Wallmart In NY ( good or bad)

Wall-Mart  undoubtedly bad for New York City.

EVIDENCE FROM THE BOOK

“ organized labors in New York fears that the retailer’s low prices and modest wages will undercut unionized stores.”  I choose this because this will drive all other stores in new york out of business. Walmart will sell anything people need in one place. people will choose to go in that place that have anything they want. this will drive other businesses out of business.

Ed Ott, Executive director of the new York city central labor council said “we have great supermarkets and great retail outlet in NY. We don’t need Wal-Mart.” i choose this because as He said we have great store and supermarkets over here in new york, and evryone is doing well. businesses are advancing and people are getting what they want.

“ Walmart wages and health benefits are often skimpy that they leave many wokers below the poverty line and pressure competitors to reduce pay and benefits.” this will put manny families that used to live happy in a very sad situation because they will worry so much about their futur instead of present problems.

"The community members are worried that walmat’s low prices and modest wages would eat into the market share of unionized retailers and put mom and pop shops out of business."

"Middle class families are worried that walmart would erode their neighborhood’s character."

EVIDENCE FROM THE MOVIE

1) Chinese Works for only 50 cent an hour, they are used by other business as a cheap labor just to satisfy walmart’s needs. This might also happen in in New york City Because there is many immigrant that came here everyday trying to escape poverty, this immigrant will be used as Chinese worker for cheap labor too.

2) Walmart decide what business are to produce or else they will force them out of business.

3)  Walmart have the ability to eliminate the most successful  businesses if they refuse to obey them.

4) Walmart trick people by saying they are cheap and affordable.

5) Walmart does not provide a good health insurance and life insurance like other companies in New York

So Definitely NO WALLMART in NY, “we don’t need you”.

Sociological Immagination Part 2

For Many Bosnians, Peace Accord Brings No Joy

By JOHN F. BURNS
Published: August 01, 1993

This article is talking about the Bosnian war which happen between 3 ethnics groups. This dividing the country into tree groups. each one of those groups wanted to rule the country. So this article is bassically saying that Bosnian did not believe they both could live together in peace because each groupe believed to be better then the other two groups. This is connected to my life because this might be what lead the civil war in my country. this might be what inspired other ehtical groups in my coutry that they are better then other. Many of relatives and freinds died during the war.

The protest that happened tree years ago in my native country of Guinea effected my life in many ways. the protest main goal was to overtrow a dictator that ruled us for 24 years and have done nothing for us. The president favored his ethical group. I lost my cousin during those protest and also many of our properties were stollen and destroyed.

In this project I connect some public issues to my personal life by showing the effect of those public issues on my life. This is related to sociological immaginaton because sociological immagination is the connection between public issues and personal life. In this project i used Sociological immagination to connect some public issue to my personal life

1)Vatican Watershed — A special report.; Papal Birth-Control Letter Retains Its Grip

Twenty-five years after Pope Paul VI put a jolting halt to expectations that the Roman Catholic Church might ease its opposition to artificial birth control, only 1 out of 10 American Catholics agree with the church’s position. But the Pope’s 1968 encyclical and the furor it created continue to polarize the American church.

Sin Nombre

Egoism: Egoism is when you only care about  your well being and not even think about other people. An example of this is when Smiley promise to the gangsters that he will kill Casper if they give him a chance, this was just to prove his innocent without thinking of his friend (Casper). Another example is when Casper saved the people on the train especially the girl, there way two man that wanted to kill him regardless what he have done for them.

Moral dilemma: Moral dilemma is when you have two option to choose from,  but both options has negative impact on you. An example of moral dilemma happens  when Smiley was giving an option to either kill Casper or never come back home. This is a tough situation because Casper was his friend so killing him would be heartless. At the same time getting thrown  out of your community without a coming back hope is painful.

Altruism: Altruism is when you help other by risking your own live. Altruism occur when Casper decided to help the people on the train by killing his leader. So, he chose to protect the girl over his life. He knew by doing that, he would be a death man.

Challenge:This movie is called  ” Sin Nombre”  because the people in the movie do not have a specific home, they do not have any type of identity and they don’t how their life is going to be in the future.

Sociology

Sociology is a social science that study the development, structure, and functioning of the society as a whole. Sociology differs from other social science in a way that it study society as a whole. For example, a sociologist may focus on the production and distribution of goods and services. A sociologist may also focus on politics and government. This is just to show that sociology do not have a specific area of study which makes it different from other social sciences. Unlike sociology, History focuses only on past event. Another Example would be Economy which only focuses on the production and distribution of goods and services (worksheet#3).

The difference between natural science and social science nis that natural science ffocuses on explaning and predicting the events in our environment while social science focuse on examining human relationship and the social world. An example of a natural science is biololgy which is also divided into botany and Zoology. An example of social science will be Anthropology which is divided into Cultural and physical anthropology (worsheet#1). Social Science and natural science are both branches of Science that have different area of study. For example: A natural scientist will study things like Animals, Plants and Human while a social scientist will study thongs such as religion, culture, and politics (worksheet#2).

Am I my brother’s keeper?

I believe that helping other is selfless because in life everyone will need help one day. so if you prefer not to help other, help won’t come to you when you need it. For example the first hero who risked her life to save another person attacked by an angry bull. She did this because she put her self into the scene and imagine herself at the same situation. If she did not help what will happen to her at a similar situation.

Am I My Brother’s Keeper? Hw 1/13/11
  1. What happens in this story? What are the most important events?

First, Adam and Eve had two kids named Abel and Cain. One day Both Cain and Abel give something to god and it turned out that god liked Abel’s offer more than Cain’s. Abel gave God a sheep and Cain give God some fruits. However God didn’t like Cain present but loved Abel present . So as a result Cain become very jealous of his brother and killed him the God punished him by isolating him from the rest of the world.

2.When Cain say it, what does ” Am I my brother’s keeper?” mean?

This means that Cain is wondering if he is the person in charge of taking care or watching after his brother.

3.Many stories in the Bible have message. This story does, too. What do you think the message of this story is? (Hint: it has something to do with the line,”Am I my brother’s keeper”)

When we hurt others, we are basically hurting our self because if you decides not to care for others, they won’t care for you either. As a result you would end up being lonely with no one to turn to.

4.Are we responsible for the well being of other? Why/ why not?

I believe that we are responsible for the well being of others because no one is able to survive alone. In order to survive we other people to fill our loneliness.

"Waiting for Godot" Absurdism or Existentialism?

Waiting for Godot represent absurdism more than existentialism. As absurdism say that life is meaningless and anyone trying to find the meaning of his life will look like a fool or stupid. For example in the play Estragon say:

ESTRAGON: (giving up again). “Nothing to be done”.
This line shows that Estrgon is hopeless and sinic about life. He believe that his life is not worthed. So Estragon is an asurdist which mean that he believe his life don’t have any meaning and he cain’t do nothing about it or to change. So that’s why he says “Nothing to be done”. This is connected to absurdism because he give up and he believe that there is nothing he can do about it.

Waiting For Godot (Act# 3)

Vladmire: You haven’t move yet

Estragon: Oh! Let’s go before it darken more

Vladmire: Are you afraid to get beat up again

Estragon: No No ( pause) you told me that you won’t let anyone beat me

Vladmire: ( Vladmire silenced for a while)..But…but we won’t be together

Estragon: Why? Did you found a rope or what?

Vladmire: No..(paused) i mean it’s time for each of us to take is own path

Estragon: We gona come back tomorrow to see if Godot is here?

Vladmire: Damm.. for the first time you remember something i have told you

Estragon: No.. don’t you remember about the chicken bones Pozzo gave me

Vladmire: Yes what happen? I guess you still have some of them bone saved in your pocket.

Estragon: (Estragon put his in his pocket and took out a bone) Here you see i stll have one and it still fresh

Vladmire: Shut you dam mounth, you nasty pig…

Estragon: you want some?

Vladmire: Hell no i won’t eat those stinky bones

Estragon: (Estragon cracke all them bone) Let’s go

Vladmire: Go where?

Estragon: Hang our self

Vladmire: We don’t have a rope

Estragon: So what we do then?

Vladmire: Let’s wait For godot

Estragon: OH! he is coming

Vladmire: I hope so… The boy said he was coming today

Estragon: Who?

Vladmire: Godot Stupid

(They waited hoping that Godot will appear )…………

Waiting For Godot and Life in the Bronx

POZZO: “He’s stopped crying. (To Estragon.) You have replaced him as it were. (Lyrically.) The tears of the world are a constant quantity. For each one who begins to weep, somewhere else another stops. The same is true of the laugh. (He laughs.) Let us not then speak ill of our generation, it is not any unhappier than its predecessors. (Pause.) Let us not speak well of it either. (Pause.) Let us not speak of it at all. (Pause. Judiciously.) It is true the population has increased”.

This line is how Pozzo is bringing up excuses about why he treat Lucky unhumanly. This is connected to human condition because in life rich people will always have excuses why they treat poor people bad or why they do not care about poor people. For example a rich man will say it is because I work hard that’s why I am rich and same thing for a poor, he will also say that poor people are just lazy , that’s why they are poor. But this is not true at all because people are not given the same opportunities in life. For example a Bronx kid have a less chance to go to college. Schools were minorities goes have less ressources then other school were white kids attend. So white kids have a greater chance to succed then a black or hispanic kid. But the rich will always have something to say when this issue is brought up.

In addition,”Waiting for Godot” ullustrate life in in the Bronx. For example in the play Waiting for Godot Estragon get beat up all the time at night, similarly in the Bronx peole also get beat up and robed at night with it is dark.

Important Lines From Waiting for Godot (Outcome 11-13)

1-) VLADIMIR: “(stutteringly resolute). To treat a man … (gesture towards Lucky) … like that … I think that … no … a human being … no … it’s a scandal!”

This line is important because it shows that Vladmire is a good person because he wouldn’t treat lucky the same way Pozzo treats him. Vladmire fell that it is nonhuman to treat a fellow human like a slave or an animal. This is connected to human condition because in real life rich people only care about other rich people and also poor also care for one another . It also show that even though we have many nasty people that treat other like trash, we also have some good people that treat everyone the same. So Vladmire seems to be a good person by saying “To treat a man … (gesture towards Lucky) … like that … I think that … no … a human being”

2-)POZZO: “He’s stopped crying.

This line is important because it shows how Pozzo is bringing up excuses about why he treat Lucky unhumanly. For example a Bronx kid have a less chance to go to college then a kid living in Manhatan. Schools were minorities goes have less ressources then other school were white kids attend. So white kids have a greater chance to succed then a black or hispanic kid

3-)VLADIMIR: And now you turn him away? Such an old and faithful servant!     ESTRAGON: Swine! Pozzo more and more agitated.    VLADIMIR: After having sucked all the good out of him you chuck him away like a … like a banana skin. Really …    POZZO: (groaning, clutching his head). I can’t bear it … any longer … the way he goes on … you’ve no idea … it’s terrible … he must go … (he waves his arms) … I’m going mad … (he collapses, his head in his hands) … I can’t bear it … any longer … Silence. All look at Pozzo.

This lines are important because it shows that Pozzo want to get rid of Lucky because he feel that lucky is no longer strong enough to serve him. He used him and now he want to dump him like a trah. Vladmire says: “After having sucked all the good out of him you chuck him away like a … like a banana skin. Really …”. Pozzo have used him like an animal and suddently he want to get rid of him. This is connected to human condition because in life many people will pretend they want to be with you just to use what you have and when what you have is over they will turn their back to you and pretend they don’t even know you.

4-)VLADIMIR: (angrily). “No one ever suffers but you. I don’t count. I’d like to hear what you’d say if you had what I have”.
This line is important because it shows that Vladmire and Estragon are very different personal. It’s like Vladmire is richer than Estragon but the weird thing is that why they hang out together? Usually, in the real life, riche deals with the rich and poor also deals with the poor.

5-)ESTRAGON: (giving up again). “Nothing to be done”.
This line is important because it shows that Estrgon is hopeless and sinic about life. He believe that his life is not worthed. So Estragon is more like an asurdist which mean that he believe his life don’t have any meaning and he cain’t do nothing about it or to change. So that’s why he says “Nothing to be done”. This is connected to absurdism because he give up and he believe that there is nothing he can do about it.

6-)VLADIMIR: “You’re my only hope”.
This line is important because it shows the reason why Vladmire came back to Estragon. Which mean that he have no other friend except Estragon. Without Estragon, his life would be meaningless. I believe that Estragon and Vladmire fill each others lonelyness. Each one of them is a very importante part of the other survival. This is connected to existentialism because vladmire have hope for life as long us he have Estragon near by.

7-)ESTRAGON:

What am I to say?

VLADIMIR:

Say, I am happy.

Explaination: This lines connects to absurdism because it is like saying something you don’t really feel. It doesn’t make sense to command someone to say something they don’t feel just to satisfy your subconscious, that unfair because you just saying that is not how you feel and its like lying to your own self just to make someone else happy

8-)Vladimir: “wait for Godot. Things have changed here since yesterday.”

This line is important because it shows how nothing stays the same forever, as life goes by things changes overtime. These changes could be either positive or negative. I also think that this line is a way to show a change in Vladimir and estragon’s life, either way the way lived the day before and where they are at the moment is not the same. This line is also connected to existentialism because it shows a connection between time and life. As I mentioned above, as day goes by things change, then people change. Estragon and Vladimir are in a journey of finding the meaning to their lives and as time goes by they are getting closer, maybe they are getting nowhere but somehow the setting changes. Maybe the dead tree have some leafs.

9-)Estragon: “what is there to recognize? All my lousy life I’ve crawled about in the mud! And you talk to me about scenery.”

This line is important because it shows the effect of poverty on people mentally and emotionally. Estragon has hard time remembering things because of his awful living conditions, and his got no hope for the future. In other words this line is trying to say that when people live in such conditions in life it affects them both mentally and emotionally. An as a result they looses interest in everything in life which means giving up. This line is connected to absurdism because it shows that life has no meaning and if you try to find a meaning to your life you would look stupid and waste your life.

10-)Vladimir: “but yesterday evening it was all black and bare. And now it’s covered with leaves.”

This line is important because it shows a change in the setting, finally the dead tree have leaves on it. I think that is suggestion to a positive change. If the dead tree represented dead and bad living condition therefore leaves on the tree should represent fresh life and good living condition or future. This line is connected to existentialism because it shows that things can change and nothing stays the same forever. This line is almost trying to say that, when you try hard enough to give a meaning to your life you would find one.

11-)   POZZO: (sobbing). He used to be so kind … so helpful … and entertaining … my good angel … and now … he’s killing me.

This is related to the idea of absurdism because it is something that doesn’t really make any sense because Pozzo demonstrates that Lucky is making him feel worse than anything, but in reality Lucky is serving him. So it doesn’t make sense that when Lucky is giving everything for Pozzo, Pozzo feels destroyed but when Lucky was on command he used to like it. However, the weirdest thing is that although Pozzo can’t deal with the Lucky’s condition he is acting like he doesn’t care and use, abuse and exploit Lucky in all forms.

12-) vladimir :”Hand in hand from the top of the Eiffel Tower, among the first. We were respectable in those days. Now it’s too late. They wouldn’t even let us up.”

I think that this line is important because of all the lines this line actually tells me something from their past, of who they where and this helps us uderstand what is happening better and posibly make better predictions.
